Sinclair Hille Architects, in association with Anderson Mason Dale, provided planning and design services for this 261-bed, suite-style housing project which provides apartment-style amenities in an urban environment.
The design focused on the creation of a ‘Student Village’ much like one would find in old world European communities. Multi-faceted roofs, varying window fenestration designs and facade elements all work together to enliven the street-side experience of passers-by. An additional benefit is the creation of a private interior courtyard. Ground level units surrounding this courtyard are set behind ‘loggia style’ walkways, which allow students to come and go without entering the larger building complex. A focal point of the courtyard is a tower element on the east facade which forms the terminus of the visual axis between the housing complex and the rest of the campus to the southwest.
The student apartments include two, three and four bed combinations, of varied layout and character. A few of the units adjacent to the courtyard tower are two stories in height, featuring open circular staircases and balconies. Windows are large and plentiful, yielding generous views to the courtyard and surrounding neighborhood.
