Inspiring Minds Childcare Facility

Sinclair Hille designed the Inspiring Minds Preschool and Daycare facility in a rapidly developing area in southeast Lincoln nestled into an area with existing trees. The facility was the first in the new development and was intended to spark growth in the area and drive the high level contemporary design aesthetic of future buildings. The design concept focused on a bright and flexible environment with ample outdoor playground space and included daycare classrooms for infants through pre-school, a warming kitchen, office, and staff breakroom.

Design challenges included the odd shape of the property due to the existing wetland area to the west. Due to the low floor level, special consideration was given to roof equipment visibility and achieving an aesthetically pleasing appearance from the highway. Parapets were used to solve this problem which also provided an opportunity to incorporate signage into the parapet.

The building is oriented facing the southwest so the large classroom windows would receive a lot of strong summer sunlight. Canopies were provided on all the classroom windows for effective daylighting. Each classroom has an exterior door that allows children to easily access the playground and outdoor spaces. Near the main entry, a custom metal panel features the Inspiring Minds logo and provides an opportunity for branding and a strong design element. The material palette was used in conjunction with a modern massing providing the building with a contemporary aesthetic with a clear and efficient functionality.

I enjoyed working with SHA on the Canopy Street Project.  It was a very complex project which required both large scale design thought as well as a focus on small details. Their professionalism impressed me as well as all of the other clients in the project from restaurants, to hotel operations through condo buyers, SHA continued to move the project forward and solve problems with all in mind.  As a licensed architect myself I really appreciated their willingness to partner with me and listen to my design ideas while improving the direction time and time again. Quite simply, Canopy Street would not have been nearly as successful without SHA’s talented staff.
