June & Paul Schorr III Center for Computer Science & Engineering

Sinclair Hille Architects was selected by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to design a three-story classroom building on the south side of Memorial Stadium to serve as the home of the Paul and June Schorr III Center for Computer Science and Engineering.

After nearly 35 years as the home of the athletic administration and football offices, the South Stadium office complex was renovated into a state-of-the-art facility for computer science and engineering.

The Schorr Center consolidates over 18,000 s.f. of classrooms and offices for the Department of Computer Science and Engineering that were previously fragmented in three separate facilities. Renovation of the building was critical to the University’s vision to be recognized for innovative research in software engineering, informatics, and systems.

PrairieFire, one of the most powerful supercomputers in the state, was also moved to the Schorr Center. It is used by scientists and engineers to study subjects such as nanoscale chemistry, subatomic physics, meteorology, genomics, crash-worthiness, and artificial intelligence.

The exterior design of the building is a deliberate departure from the concrete stadium surroundings. A new steel-framed façade was placed in front of the existing concrete building face. The sleek, contemporary design uses lightweight transparent materials in monochromatic and neutral colors that are animated by light and color to create a dynamic facade.
